A citizen of the United States of America can apply for a government grant. Government grants are fundamentally monetary funds granted by different government authorities, corporations, departments, foundations, etc. These grants are legal ‘money giveaways’. Federal grants are not to be mistaken with federal help or federal loans. These grants are monetary gains that are made obtainable by the government to those individuals or groups who fulfill the eligibility criteria set up for these government grants. In fact, many people are not aware of the fact that these free grants are easily available to the public.
Numerous types of organisations and groups are eligible and can apply for these government grants. Some of them are: – Different government organisations like State government, City or Township Governments, special District Governments, etc. – Education organisations like Independent school districts, Nonpublic Institutions of Higher Education, Public and State Controlled Institutions of Higher Education. – Public housing organisations and non profit organisations. – Profit organisations like small businesses that meet the size criteria that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has set forth.
Apart from the above named groups, individuals can also apply for grants provided by the government. If they do so, then they will be able to sign up only on their behalf. With that, when one applies as an individual, one is allowed only for those government grants that are open to people. Currently, over nine hundred grants are being issued by 26 federal authorities in the United States.
There are four main types of grants. The first are the project grants. These are granted to people on competitive bases. These grants are used primarily for conducting scientific research, employed to aid educational goals, for welfare works, different technological developments, healthcare, projects related to arts, etc. The second type of government grants are those that are utilized for people who could do with work related training. The next type of grant is categorical grants that are used for various intentions like hazard abatement project, urban forestry assistance and other specific projects. The last set of grants are block grants, wherein a huge sum of money is given to state or lower government bodies with specific provisions on how they must be utilised.
Either you should be a U.S. citizen above 18 years of age or you should be a resident alien if you want to apply for and claim government grants. It is only if you satisfy these standards will you be able to avail a copy of the grant application package, fill in the application and submit it.
If you live in the United States, the government has set aside State Grants to help individuals like you who need additional financial assistance. For example, you could apply for New York Medical Grants if you live in New York.
