This picture was probably made around 1870 while Grant was sitting president. Historians have been rather kinder to Grant recently than they once were. Grant’s presidency was marked by frequent scandal due to Grant having trouble controlling his surrounding pals, but Grant was an early defender of civil rights for minorities, especially African Americans. He fought and distinguished himself in the Mexican War (1846-1848), then vocally turned against it as "…one of the most unjust [wars] ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation."
